Patching with Shavlik Protect slow

$

Hi guys,

I'm new to this forum so please be patient in case I'm asking a question that has already been asked.

i'm using Shavlik Protect in the version 9.0.0 and I'm wondering if the tool is simply extremely slow or if it's a misconfiguration on my side?

I need to patch around 300 Windows Servers in a timely fashion every second month and I'm not keen on waiting for 10 hours+ until they're completed.

e.g.: Patching one server (around 120 Patches) longs now for more than 2 hours. Patching a similar system with Windows Updates takes around 45 Minutes.

Can somebody please advice me where to tune the Shavlik-System?

Thx,

Philipp

MS Updates are listed multiple times in Win2008R2?

Hello Forum.   More of a general observation question than anything, seeing that this application deals with updates.   I am experiencing this on multiple Win2008R2 servers, and it's not always the same MS update #.   I have ruled out Shavlik, as it happens when I manually install an update.

When scanning thru the updates in the View Installed Updates window, I am seeing identical entries for updates.   They seem to be more prevalent for Office and Lang Packs.  Has anyone else experienced this phenomenon and received confirmation from Microsoft that this is an "known issue" or a bug with the program?

Thanks for your time.

Overlooked Patches....

Hi there,

I am using Shavlik Protect Standard 9.1.0  Build: 4334 on a W7, 64-bit with MS-Office 2010 installed.

I scan 'My Machine' and it lists 11 patches as missing (see Pic1 - below).

A reboot is scheduled and completes (normal countdown timer, etc).

Once the machine reboots I do a further scan of my machine but find it has no installed any of the 11 patches (see Pic2 - below).

Running Windows Update I am told that 'Windows is up to date'.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Kim.

Unable to install the Scheduler Service

I have two machines on which I cannot install the scheduler service. When I try to install the scheduler I get the error "The scheduler on machine 'xxxx' is not available. (Error: 10060)" and an option to upgrade which is just a loop. I compared this server to one of its counterparts and one thing I noticed is on the working machine there is a process called STSchedEx.exe *32 (and associated service) but that process is not found on the failing machine. I confirmed that the application is located in the windows\ProPatches\Scheduler folder and even copied all the files from the good server. I'm not able to manually start the process as it indicates that it can't find the file.  My main reason for looking into this is during deployment all the files and patches will copy but the install of patches will not initiate. If you go to the server and run the batch file that was copied everything works fine so it seems the scheduler is not functioning.  Looking for any suggestions.

Old Adobe Flash plug-in shows as missing on Win7 x64 & Srv 2008 R2

NetCheck Protect 7.8.380.0, XML version 2.0.0.1976. Adobe Flash plug-in shows as missing on Windows 7 x64 & Server 2008 R2 (but not on Vista 32bit): "File cannot be located:[C:WindowsSysWOW64MacromedFlashFLASH11G.OCX (11.1.102.63)]".
The installed version however is Flash 11.2.202.235 with the plug-in Flash32_11_2_202_235.ocx. - Is there a problem with the detection of the 32bit version on x64 systems?

Thanks

Hi everyone,

A guy in my team needs to deploy a Microsoft KB (KB2520487) on all our Windows 2008 servers.

I visualized the "How to create a custom Patch" page, but i'm not sure if this is the right way.

The patch is a .MSU file.  I read the documetn http://community.shavlik.com/docs/DOC-1902.

Does someone has already addressed a similar request ?

Thank you.

Shavlik - Apple Itunes update is broken.

Hello Fellow Shavlik patchers.

I have just tested the latest patch from Apple iTunes update on one of my staff workstations.

- Added AI14-001(QAI1114): Itunes 11.1.4 for Windows

This is the result. 1-30-2014 3-23-21 PM.jpg

Please beware...

To resolve the issue.

Go to Control Panel> Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)

Remove all of these items in the following order:

  • iTunes
  • Apple Software Update
  • Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall press on)
  • Bonjour
  • Apple Application Support

Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.

See also HT1925: Removing and Reinstalling iTunes for Windows XP or HT1923: Removing and reinstalling iTunes for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8. Some users may need to follow all the steps in the appropriate support document which includes some additional manual file and folder deletions not mentioned above.

Thanks,

Sirstox

Scripted uninstall of Shavlik Protect Agent?

$

So now that we have our installation script working. What options are there for uninstalling?

If we do it manually through Add/Remove Programs, we first have to uninstall any Engines (Patch and/or Asset) and then we can remove the Agent itself.

Is there a switch for the STPlatformUpdater.exe file that will result in everything being uninstalled from the machine?

Or will I have to script msiexec /X for each item?

Thanks,

Agentless Patching and Windows 2008 R2 UAC - Issues?

$

Hi Folks,

I have several systems running Windows 2008 R2 with UAC enabled (User Account Control), and at times when I try to scan those machines I get the following message - Error: 452 - .... is unable to scan this machine.

When I disable the UAC, scanning works and I can deploy patches.

I am using agentless patching

Anyone know if UAC is an issue overall and how I can work through it.

BTW - I have tried to get it disabled on all system, but my security admin believe's it's important.

Thoughts?

How Do I Automate Patch Scan/Deployment on New Systems?

$

I'm working on an automated deployment process for both new physical and new virtual systems.  I'm trying to figure out how I can scan, patch, and validate successful patching against a new system.  Basically, the process would be part of a build script/workflow (written in-house) that is building the new system.  At some point, it would run a scan using a patch template we've already created, deploy service packs and patches as needed, validate those patches got installed, then rescan the machine to ensure no additional patches were needed.  Effectively, everything I do today with my keyboard and mouse, but eliminating me from the picture. :-)

I'm a very capable scripter/programmer, but I can't find any API documents, CLI tools, etc. that would help with this process.

Does anyone know of anything or a creative/outside-the-box method of accomplishing the same?

Detection error missing KB2934018 for Windows 8.1 Update 1

$

On systems with Windows 8.1 Update 1 2934018 (KB2919355 release from April 8, 2014), Shavlik Protect (XML data version 2.0.0.7014) reports KB 2934018 as missing, by stating that "the registry key 'SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\Packages\Package_for_KB2934018~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.3.1.5\CurrentState' does not exist." - This is the case with Windows 8.1 Update 1 as well as with Windows Server 2012 R2 Update 1.

As explained in a WindowsITPro article, "apparently, the KB2919355 release (of) April 8, 2014, includes an update not included with the MSDN/TechNet update available early. Today's release (author's note: i.e. the public release of April 8) has a new file included (KB2934018) not available with the MSDN/TechNet version." Therefore, KB KB2934018 is only necessary for the MSDN/TechNet version installed before April 8.

Did you realize this error and will there be a revised XML any soon?

Thanks

May 2014 second Tuesday Patch scanning

Hi,

I have a Windows 7 machine on which I have installed Microsoft .NET 1.1 and 4.5.1.

I scan this machine for May 2014 patches using Shavlik Protect. Interestingly the scan shows missing patch for .NET 3.5.1 (Q2931356) which I have not installed on my machine at all.

Why Shavlik Protect is showing up this patch as missing eventhough my machine does not have .NET 3.5.1?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you

What is this error directing me to check or what could be the issue?

Agent Registration for reimage/reloaded systems?

$

How does Shavlik handle agent registrations for systems that have been wiped and reloaded for one reason or another?

For example, PC01 was active in the domain and had active agent on it. Issue occurred and PC01 was reloaded with fresh install of the OS and joined to domain as PC01 again. The Shavlik install script appeared to work normally, but the agent window showed "No Policy" and agent check-ins were failing.

The registration log appeared normal as well. There were no errors or warnings that a machine named PC01 was already registered with the console.

It wasn't until we deleted PC01 from the machines view and reran registration from the client that everything started working again.

Could not read the remote registry: Error 5: Access is denied.

I am trying to install the agent on a workgroup computer from a domain computer and keep getting, "Could not read the remote registry: Error 5: Access is denied."  I am using the correct credentials on the machine, <computer><user> but it will not connect.  What am I missing?  The user name is an administrator on the workgroup machine and I verified the Administrators group has Full Control permissions to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSecurePipeServerswinreg.  The workgroup machine is Windows 7 Professional.

Shavlik Protect Agent 9.0 Java 7 Update 65 Bug

$

Hello Forum Users/Support, We use the Shavlik Protect Agent to patch user laptops that are not connected to the network 24/7 and everything was working until the latest version of Java 7 update 65 was included. When Shavlik protect agent downloads and installs Java 7 Update 65 it is not silent and requites user to supply Administrative credentials then they have to click through several installation prompts. I believe this is a bug or incorrect shavlik agent xml file as this is the first time the Shavlik Agent has prompted users for credentials and installation prompts.  We have several hundred laptops now prompting users to for Administrative credentials to install Java 7 update 65 and is unrealistic to have to go to each laptop to install the Java update.  Until now the shavlik agent installed all software silently without requiring user credentials. Is there anyone that is having this problem with Shavlik Protect Agent and the new Java update 65 and what is the fix for this. Thanks, Tom
