I was wondering if anyone has had any sucess scripting/packaging the VMware View Agent as a custom patch.
We just went from 5.0 to 5.2 and need to now upgrade 100+ manual VM's. I was wondering if there was a way to use a custom patch to accomplish this.
It's just a pain since you have to always go in the order of VM Tools then agent. Luckily you can upgrade tools without having to uninstall the agent using Shavlik.
Please provide some suggestions!

This is my attempt to determine the difference in two updates included in MS13-072. In the security bulletin it states :
I have Microsoft Word 2010 installed. Why am I not being offered the 2767913 update?
The 2767913 update only applies to systems running specific configurations of Microsoft Office 2010. Other systems will not be offered the update
I have been asked by several people what those specific configurations are.

What is that product specifically?

I have been asked the question above as we currently use Shavlik heavily in our Windows environment and we are going to start doing the same with Unix, Linux and Mac. So I wanted to know if we can continue to use Shavlik for this or do we have to look elsewhere?

Microsoft has released many non-security updates in Nov 2014 but the latest Protect XML has very few non-security updates.
I just wanted to check with you when can I expect latest XML with all non-security updates. This information really helps me since our patch release depends on Shavlik Protect's XML.
Also I would like to know how much time Shavlik generally takes to release the monthly XML after second Tuesday?

I just installed Protect version 9 (build 1182) onto a Win2012 server. I was able to successfully scan a machine, and deployed all needed patches. When I pulled up the deployment tracker, however, all I see is that the patches are scheduled. It never moves beyond that point, and it has been 40 minutes. When I look at the machine, the hard drive light is flashing like crazy, so it's definitely working on something. I have the remote registry service started on that machine (Win7x64). The deployment parameters indicate that patches should install immediately. What should I be looking for that might provide a clue as to what might be happening and how to correct? Should I just reboot the machine or rescan to see if anything looks different?
Hi, has anyone else come across KB3008923 (MS14-080) breaking IE9 after install;
Ideally I would like to remove this from Shavlik Protect but am not too sure how, any ideas?

I am using Protect to take a snapshot before deploying patches to enable an easy rollback point if required.
I have set the Delete old snapshots (age in days) to 2 days, but the snapshots are still there 4 days later (and getting huge...)
I just checked the docco and it appears that in order to trigger a snapshot removal I have to create a snapshot??
Delete old snapshots created by VMware vCenter Protect (age in days) | If enabled, indicates the number of days a snapshot created by VMware vCenter Protect will be allowed to exist. Snapshots older than the specified number of days are automatically deleted. The threshold is checked each time a new pre-deployment or post-deployment snapshot is made. |
You can choose to manage snapshot retention both by the number of snapshots and by the snapshot age. In this case, when a pre- or post-deployment snapshot is requested, all snapshots created by VMware vCenter Protect that are older than the specified number of days are deleted. If the number of remaining snapshots still exceeds the maximum number specified, the oldest of those will be deleted until only the maximum number specified remain.
Can someone please confirm if this is correct?
The idea of creating a snapshot to remove one seems odd...

Hello again.
I have a scheduled scan of our network set for 10:30 am. The scan didn't run until 12:47pm. I have confirmed its start time in the log, and also confirmed the schedule time on the job. What might have prevented the scan from running on time (besides the obvious, e.g., Shavlik computer offline)? This is for Shavlik 9.x non-agent scans.

I want our Shavlik server to pull machines from multiple domains. Is this possible? Obviously, a server can only be "on" one domain at a time. Is it possible though, through AD trusts, that Shavlik will pull from all the domains that my primary domain can see? Right now that does not seem to be happening. I can't figure out if it's possible to add more than one domain to the "my domain" group. If I select Manage -> scheduled tasks it actually lists the other 3 domains under "Enterprise." I would think since it sees the other domains it would pull form them but it's not.
Any ideas?
Is there a way in Protect to make sure that ALL servers get rebooted even if they don't require any patches?

So I found this doc: How to trouble shoot failed to download the latest manifest file issue.
I followed the resolution and I'm able to download the file via IE, but the Refresh File give the same result.

Is this possible? I see how to export a machine group to the xml file. I don't want that. I want it in a .txt file so I can import it as a .txt file into an existing group.
I thought I had this solved but apparantly not.
I cannot make contact with an agent unless the Windows 7 firewall is off. I have opened up ports 139 and 445 and opened the Shavlik program in the firewall. I still cannot have the agent check in. what are the proper ports, programs, etc to use with Shavlik 9.

I am attempting to download the FireFox Setup 23.0.1.exe and receiving "The remote server returned an error: [403] Forbidden," Is there any way to identify where the download is actually trying to come from to see if we might be blocking it or is there another reason why this particular update can't be downloaded? Can I manually download the upgrade?
Help ! I'm getting a 1603 error when trying to install ShavlikProtectPatch_9.0.1304 ( Patch 2 for Protect 9.0 ) on a Windows 7 PC. This instance of Protect has been working fine for months, and still is apart, from not installing Patch 2
Have tried the following....
1. Run as local administrator
2. Rebooted PC
3. Stopped and restarted Shavlik Protect
4. Updated Protect to Patch Assessment level 2.0.1.328
Any ideas anyone ? 1603 is quite a generic error, for which there are a number of causes.

You are trying to install a program into an encrypted folder.

You are trying to install a program to a folder on a drive letter that is actually a substitute drive.
No, it's the C: drive
The SYSTEM account needs Full Control permission to the destination folder, and does not have that.
already has Full Control
A previous install or uninstall has not completed, or failed.
Not aware of anything, but PC has been rebooted, so this should have cleared any possibility of this.
The registry contains dead/bad links
Perhaps.....?
